We used cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a nationally representative multi-stage probability sample of the non-institutionalized civilian United States population conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). NHANES protocols were approved by the NCHS Research Ethics Review Board, and all participants provided written informed consent. Data from two consecutive survey cycles (2011–2012 and 2013–2014) were pooled for this analysis because these were the two cycles where the participants were asked questions about taste problems.

Inclusion criteria included adult participants aged 20 years or older who provided a valid, definitive “Yes” or “No” response to the primary chemosensory survey item (CSQ080): “Have you had a problem with taste in the past 12 months?” Out of 24,537 initial interviewees, after excluding those with missing responses, 3,595 valid cases remained.
