Population sampling
A total of 975 unrelated males from 27 Colombian departments along the five main natural regions of the country were selected for this study (see sampling locations and sizes in Fig. 1). DNA extraction was performed from blood samples using a Chelex method [32] or a salting-out protocol as described by Miller et al. [33].
This research follows the ethical principles stated in the Helsinki Declaration (2000) of the World Medical Association. The samples were collected under written informed consent. The project and informed consents were approved by the ethics committees from the Universidad Industrial de Santander (CEINCI − 11/08/2023) and from the University of Cartagena (approval number: 040).
