This study suggests that mentalization capacity is an important psychological factor associated with burnout among physicians in Montenegro. Higher levels of hypomentalizing were associated with greater emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, whereas higher levels of hypermentalizing were associated with lower levels of these burnout dimensions.

The association between alexithymia and burnout should be interpreted cautiously, as the observed findings may reflect a suppression effect rather than a direct relationship.
