In conclusion, this study demonstrated that moderate-intensity treadmill exercise enhanced the anticonvulsant efficacy of topiramate and attenuated its anxiety and depressive-like side effects in a rat model of epilepsy. These effects were associated with upregulation of 5-HT1A receptor expression level in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. While these preclinical findings were promising and provided a strong rationale for further investigation, future translational and clinical studies were warranted before any clinical recommendations can be made.
