HthCRESSV1 represents a circular DNA virus with unique genomic features and a close association with oomycete mitochondria. Its genome encodes a divergent Rep protein and a membrane-associated HP conserved in mitogenomes, suggesting prolonged interaction with the mitochondrial compartment. The absence of recognizable capsid genes and the presence of repetitive regulatory elements point to a separated evolutionary trajectory within cressdnaviricots. Together, these findings expand current views of CRESS virus diversity and highlight mitochondria as a potential niche for circular DNA replicons in eukaryotes.
